Banks are protected from counterfeit hryvnia, - UniCredit Bank

01.12.2014

Every day, banks are working with large amounts of cash – they’re taking it at the cash department, in the ATMs, in offices and etc. No wonder, in some cases, when checking the bank can find counterfeit hryvnia banknotes.

"Banks are protected from counterfeit hryvnia - financial institutions are equipped with special equipment. We are talking about currency detector, with which the cash departments are provided. They allow testing more sophisticated security elements of the national currency - infrared point, invisible lint, fluorescent design elements, magnetic protection and etc. In addition, when receiving large amounts of cash banks are using modern cash sorting equipment, carrying out thorough detection of banknotes" - explains Svitlana Pluzhnik, UniCredit Bank head of support, management coordination of work with cash and collection services.

An important element of the protection of the banks of counterfeit banknotes is sending from the regulator. "NBU regularly sends lists of numbers of identified counterfeit notes to the banks, where it indicates a possible denomination of bills, ways of counterfeiting, the region, the bank, which a large consignment of counterfeit was discovered. If the cashier is doubtful about the bill, it is possible to check the serial number" - adds Pluzhnik.

How citizens can identify the counterfeits

Among the signs of payment and originality the following ones should be considered:

  • watermark - a portrait of public figures on the left side on the front side of the bill. This watermark differs from the counterfeit one with blurred contours. But in general, drawing on the bill should be clear;
  • protective tape, the polymer tape - drowned in the depth of the bill is viewed by the left of the center of the bill when examining the front side of the banknote against the light;
  • latent (hidden image) - the relief of the digital value that is hidden in the decorative elements with the image of a small emblem of Ukraine. The latent image is clearly visible when the banknote is at an acute angle to a light source;
  • embossed text - is located at the left edge of the front side of the banknote;
  • the degree of elasticity (crunch) of the banknote.

UniCredit Bank Expert advises a careful examining the change, which is given in store, markets, etc., and offers avoiding to exchange large bills on the street. In case of doubtful banknotes still hit the wallet, citizens can go to any bank to conduct research relevant territorial department of the NBU.

"If in result of the examination the bill is legal payment, then its nominal value is reimbursed. Counterfeit banknotes are withdrawn without compensation of their value and transferred to the Ministry of Internal Affairs to conduct appropriate investigations. The examination is free of charge "- sums up Pluzhnik.
