UniCredit Bank has launched a charity project aimed to help Ukrainian butterfly children

On September 1, 2014 UniCredit Bank has launched an internal charity initiative to raise funds for children with Epidermolysis bullosa - Gift Matching Program 2014.

Within the the project each employee of financial institution can personally help Ukrainian butterfly children by transferring funds to “Debra-Ukraine” specialized Centre. At the end of the project UniCredit will double funds collected by employees.

Because of its uniqueness Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is a little-known disease in Ukraine. In fact, Epidermolysis bullosa is an incurable genetic disorder of the skin and mucous membranes that affects the child since birth. Patients with the EB have a very thin skin and mucous membranes that even the light touch and a slight friction create wounds (blebs) that do not heal for a long time. The disease is considered as infantile, because patients who have severe (dystrophic) form of the EB rarely cross the 30-year milestone because of a high risk of skin cancer. Some babies die at birth or within a few months of life. Children affected by EB are called butterflies due to the delicate skin.

The "Debra Ukraine" Center, which specializes in helping children with Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) has been working in country since the year 2011. During its existence, the organization has created a register of patients with EB, opened a special cabinet in OHMATDET hospital, conducted a series of workshops for parents of affected children, and made 5 free targeted shipments of medicines to all patients. “This year our bank has joined the project to purchase medicines for sick children. Through the combined efforts of the bank and charitable organization 48 children from different parts of Ukraine received the necessary products for daily care. Overall, the bank financed the purchase of 80% of monthly drug norm, vital for the butterfly children. But yet the problem of EB in Ukraine is quite acute. Because of this, the "Debra Ukraine" Centre became a member of the Gift Matching Program - an international charitable initiative of UniCredit”, - says Irina Kobylchenko, Director of Identity and Communications at UniCredit Bank.

It is worth mentioning, that due to the success of Gift Matching Program 2013 Bank donated 82 000 UAH to the "Ray of Hope". From September 1 to November 29, 2013 the employees of the institution collected funds for the benefit of the "Ray of Hope" Center in Makarov. In current mid-April UniCredit Foundation doubled the money raised by employees. Mentioned charitable aid is directed to care for children living in the center without parental warmth. Necessary medicines, cleaning supplies and stationery, tableware have been already purchased; part of the amount was spent on the services of a speech therapist.

In 2014 Gift Matching Program lasts from September 1 till November 28

About Gift Matching Program

The charitable initiative “Gift Matching Program” (GMP) appeals to those having the place for kindness and compassion in their hearts, those who cannot stay out of other people's suffering and adversity, and those who believe that one good deed can change someone's life for the better. More than 10 years ago, UniCredit and UniCredit Foundation developed and implemented the Gift Matching Program. The essence of it is that the Group people donate money to local non-profit organizations within a fixed period. After this period, UniCredit Foundation doubles the amount collected by counterparts. Hence is the name of the program – “gift matching”.
