UniCredit Bank and East Europe Foundation summarized up the "Warm Heart" joint social project


The project, which began in March 2015, aimed to establish a system of recovery of mental health and social adaptation of migrants in Zhytomyr region. Though joint project has ended, local partners who helped in the project continue their important work.

For six months the local partner of the project Zhytomyr Regional Association of Specialists did their best to provide the necessary assistance to more than 400 internally displaced persons who have settled in the areas of compact settlement, in particular at the "Zhytomyr" and "Sport" hotels, located in the city of Zhitomir, "Teterev" resort for parents with children in Korostyshev, as well as settlements in Berdichev and Korosten. Mostly these were women with children, the aged persons and people with special needs. At the moment, they received psychological help and began the process of mental health recovery.

In total, 12 professional psychologists who have received additional training were selected for the project. During the six months specialists conducted 80 psychotherapy groups for adults and children among internally displaced persons (IDPs) and provided 320 individual consultations for children, adults, aged persons.

The direct work with IDPs began with a pilot visits to the areas of their compact settlement, with an introduction, definition of psychologists’ schedule, a group list concluding. A special attention was given to children. First of all, there were created an art therapy groups in institutions where children of internally displaced persons have been massively located. The most popular classes were dough art, isotherapy, classes with various gaming techniques. All group activities were aimed not only to determine a diagnosis, for the most part they served for correcting emotional states (aggression), overcoming fears. This form of work allowed psychologists not only to act quickly and dedicate after school time of children but also to establish the relationships with adults.

Also the "Tolerance and prevention of cross-cultural conflicts" and "Life in the new city - Benefits and Challenges" trainings were carry out. The aim of training was to teach participants to recognize and avoid hate speech, introduce the problems of national communities, the human rights situation in the region. Representatives of local authorities, experts, representatives of NGOs and migrants were invited to establish a dialogue and promote understanding.

"Psychology of traumatic situations in the work with the internally displaced persons" interactive glide developed by the specialist have become an important component of the project. It will be useful for those who work with internally displaced persons in other regions of Ukraine.

The project gained popularity in professional circles. During its implementation psychologists sent the offers to join the projects to Zhytomyr Regional Association of specialists. Therefore, the project will be extended on a voluntary basis in the Zhytomyr region.

To recall, earlier partners implemented a number of projects aimed at helping vulnerable groups in the process of social integration and the development of communities in Ukraine. The main focus of charitable projects was on such vulnerable local citizens as the elderly and young people living in small towns in Zhytomyr, Poltava and Cherkasy regions.
